One out of every
five people in the west suffers from “aphthas” – cankers in the oral
cavity.
The prevention or rapid cure of these sores is virtually impossible;
these cankers appear in people who are otherwise healthy. They are
especially prevalent among the young. With time, the severity of the
attacks eventually decreases.
The name comes from the Greek- “aphtha” meaning burning. The canker
develops in the saliva rich areas of the mount: jaws, lips, palate,
floor of the mouth, and under the tongue.
These areas are rich in nerves, and so the level of pain is
extremely high, sufferers often refrain from speaking or eating.
